Hi all, I have a 05 Highlander, 4wd.
When I do the state inspection today, the guy told me that 2 of my tires are worn out, I have to change the tires to pass the inspection, and I was told the original tire is about to last this long. The car only have 20000 mile on that, I don't know why these tires only last such a short period.
If I need to change, what's your suggestion will be? Change 4 or change 2? and what's the brand you recommend.
They recommend the Yokohama, and cost about 530 for 4 include everything.

Less material and lower rolling resistant compounds have a tendency to wear quicker. The tires on your vehicle are probably Toyo or Bridgestone. 20,000 out of original equipment tires is common, especially if you haven't been following a rotation schedule (every 6000).
You have a few choices:
Replace the 2 and match the factory equipment tires, and start a rotation and maintenance schedule that includes alignment every 18,000 and monthly air pressure checks.
or
look for 4 new, high mileage tires. the best tires for traction and mileage are as follows:
Goodyear Fortera Triple tred
Toyo Open Country HT
Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Nokian Vatiiva
If your SUV is full time 4 wheel drive, you MUST replace all 4 at the same time.
DO NOT GO TO A NATIONAL CHAIN. They will screw you every time. They will not sell you the best tire for your needs. they will sell you the best tire for their bottom line. Find a local independent tire store, and make sure to use Nitrogen inflation. It will give you better fuel economy and the tires will lat up to 30% longer.

Yokohama tires a a harder tire. I would get a Goodyear tire they seem to last longer and give you a better ride!How long the origitnal 05 Highlander tires last?The reason two of your tires wore out faster (most likely the front two) is because you didn't rotate your tires. If you rotated your tires, all 4 tires would have worn more evenly.
Recommended tire rotation interval is typically every 5K.
With proper inflation and tire rotation, cheap tires (which is what all manufacturer's put on their cars) typically last 30K-35K.
My recommendation, since you don't sound like you take your car in for tire rotations, is to simply replace the two tires that need to be replaced. There isn't a need to replace all 4 if two of them are still good.
Tires are rated by traction and temperature. Each value has a rating (A - Excellent, B-Good, C-Acceptable)
Your best tires are rated A on both traction and temperature.
I usually don't buy a tire with a C rating in either category.
The other thing to note about tires is treadwear. There is a rating number for that as well. The higher the number, the longer the tire is expected to last. However, typically the higher the number, the harder the rubber, so you'll feel more vibration in your vehicle. Use this number to determine your ride comfort and how long your tires will last. Most manufacturer's will warranty their tires to last a specific number of miles based on this number. (Again based on proper tire care)
