How do you know when to change tires on your car?

I have an '01 Subaru Forester with ~68k miles on it. I drive ~12k a year, the bulk during the summer months. There's no obvious to me reason to change the tires but I'm not a mechanic either and I know everything has its limits. How can I know when to change the tires without some salesman swindling me into buying them prematurely?

Thanks. How do you know when to change tires on your car?Sometimes tires need to be replaced before they wear out bc of other problems you can't see. I doesn't mean you have to replace them it will be wise to have it in mind, especially if you drive longer distances or have kids you want to keep safe. The best thing to do is to go to the tire store or closest place that deals in tires. Sears, Pep Boys, tire discounters, even some Wal Marts have tires shops. Have them checked out professionally bc it is free. The guy will come out and look at all your tires and point out if there are any problems and maybe measure the tread depth and check air pressure if you ask them to and to see how much life is left on them. They may have damage that you won't or don't see and they will prob tell you and show you. This does not mean you have to buy tires at that time ever, but it will tell you if there is anything wrong with them to watch out for such as cracking, bulges, belt seperation, etc. There are many things that can go wrong with tires with daily driving.

Please have them checked out for your own safety and benefit. you can even go to two or more places to see if they say the same things. But don't tell them you went to the other place(s).How do you know when to change tires on your car?look at them..any tread???? put Lincoln penny head first into tread..if it touches his head ur okHow do you know when to change tires on your car? There are ware indicators in between the treads. They are little straight pieces of rubber between the treads and when they are even with the tread its time to replace the tire. How do you know when to change tires on your car?the tires will have %26quot;wear bars%26quot; that cross the treads and when the tires are new they will be deep inside the tread but when badly worn you can see them easily. when the tread is worn down even with them replace the tires. also if the tread on the outer edge is gone replace them even if the center tread is still good. it is from under-inflated tires or if you see cracks in the tire sides or tread replace them. that is called dry rot and the tires will blow out soon /How do you know when to change tires on your car?Every car tyre has what we call threads. The deeper the thread the longer the life of the tyre. Most tyres have little nothes of rubber fused in between these threads. These mark your legal limit. With your finger you can normally feel how much thread you have left. The more flat your thread feels in comparison to your legal limit the more worn your tire is. Never leave the tyre to actually reach the legal limit.....it is dangerous and illegal. Stay safe!!How do you know when to change tires on your car?WHEN THEY ARE FLATHow do you know when to change tires on your car?USUALLY, there are %26quot;wear bars%26quot; that run horizontally between the treads of the tires. When the surface of the tire is worn down even with these wear bars, you have approximately 3/32%26quot; tread left. Change them. The tread is not deep enough to channel water, nevermind snow or slush, away from the tires to prevent hydroplaning. If you can't find the wear bars, pick up a cheap tire tread depth guage at your local auto parts store or flea market. It's only a couple of bucks. Most tires come with 11/32%26quot; tread when they are new. If you are below 4/32%26quot; you are on borrowed time and you are about to run out of luck, possibly the next time it rains.
